How POLLAST!C meets the APCO Sustainable Packaging guidelines (SPGs)

The Australian Packaging Covenant (APCO) Sustainable Packaging Guidelines (SPGs) are ten principles for minimising the environmental impact of packaging. Here's how our POLLAST!C Range (made from recycled Ocean Bound Plastic) stacks up!

Design for Recovery

We also strongly encourage reuse through on pack messaging and instructions. The optimal recovery pathway for POLLAST!C at end-of-life is recycling. It is worth noting, that we are already able to re-recycle any POLLAST!C Packaging we collect, so our focus is on increasing the volumes we recover. We take our Product Stewardship obligations seriously and have a number of initiatives underway to improve the rate of recovery for POLLAST!C Packaging. For example, we are currently trialling 'take back' schemes for used POLLAST!C garment bags with several fashion brands. We are encouraged by the progress being made by the Soft Plastics Taskforce to re-establish soft plastics collection in Australia.

Optimise Material Efficiency

We have undertaken a full review of our POLLAST!C packaging and believe that no further reductions in packaging weight or volume are possible at the present time, without compromising on performance. Flap size has also been considered and is also as narrow as it can be while still accommodating two seals for reuse.

Design to reduce Product Waste

Our MOQs are established with production waste reduction as the key deciding factor. Products are available in a wide range of sizes so that customers are able to 'right size' their packaging. On pack messaging encourages responsible disposal and recycling.

Eliminate Hazardous Materials

POLLAST!C Packaging has been tested and declared free of PFAs.

Use Recycled Materials

POLLAST!C Mailing Satchels and Poly bags are made from a whopping 100% recycled content. This figure excludes the colourants, inks and adhesive seals used.

Use of Renewable Materials

Not applicable as materials are all recycled.

Design to Minimise Litter

All POLLAST!C packaging carries instructions for responsible disposal and encourages reuse and recycling.

Design for Transport Efficiency

POLLAST!C Packaging is by nature lightweight and very durable, making it the ideal material for packaging items for transport. The satchels are also able to be easily adjusted (by folding the seal over as tightly as possible) to accomodate items that are smaller than the bag so that the final parcel is as small as it can be. This results in minimising shipping costs and space required for transport. POLLAST!C Packaging also packs very densely and efficiently with very little wasted volume. Cartons are custom-made to best accomodate the packaging they contain.

Provide Consumer Information on Environmental Sustainability

All POLLAST!C Packaging clearly states what it is made of (certified recycled LDPE) and disposal instructions. All environmental claims are backed up by appropriate certifications.

Design for Accessibility

We're working on this! Ease of opening: Mailing satchels have to withstand the rigours of the postal system and so seals and seams have to be very strong. While we have trialled perforated opening strips, we found they were too likely to split during transit. We encourage the use of scissors to cut open the seal as this maintains the integrity of the flap for second reuse. Legibility: We aim to maximise the size of text on our packaging to make it easy to read, however on smaller sized packaging, we are limited by the space on pack to do this. We also opt for high contrast text and graphics wherever possible.
